From what I understand, the shortened season had nothing to do with Will. They had already decided when Will started asking about the wedding but the powers-that-be at BB didn't want the hgs to figure things out too early so they just told Will not to worry about it.
As I understand it - CBS made the decision to end the show early when ABC decided to air the 1st new episode of the season of Grey's Anatomy at 9pm on 9/21.
Originally the BB finale was scheduled for 8pm on 9/21 and the first episode of Survivor was scheduled for 9pm. (would have made for a great night of reality tv)
But CBS didn't want to lose viewers to Grey's Anatomy and Deal-or-no-Deal for the very first Episode of Survivor!
So they shortened BB, and moved up TAR & Survivor... trying to catch up with Fox 's early season and beat out ABC's season and NBC's Deal-or-no-Deal-A-thon
By moving up TAR & Survivor they hope to get people hooked into those shows so they won't watch DonD or any ABC programs airing opposite.
