Episode 3 Recap
As the show starts, the men are thinking about winning and the women are getting emotional. What a shocker. Bill is excited at his one in five chance of winning, while Scarlet is beginning to realize the show is teaching them more about who they are as people. Lauren thinks Richard is so cute, she wants to pick him up and eat him. Alrighty.
The beauties and geeks meet up with host Bryan McFayden to learn about their challenges for the week. The men will be learning about fashion. Bryan tells them not to worry; it's not like it's rocket science or anything (I'll let him make the bad clichés). But for the ladies ... it is rocket science. They will need to learn everything they can about building a rocket.
Krystal thinks rocket science is boring and says she's read the same page in her book five times. She believes most girls are as clueless as she is about it. Proving that, Caitilin says she's never felt smart and has always been judged on her looks. She's doing this show to prove she's not stupid. Sometimes you just can't help but feel a little for these gals.
Richard calls the fashion magazines he's reading, "The gospel according to Luke." He chooses to read out loud to Mindi an excerpt about protruding nipples and covering them with bandaids. Scarlet teaches Shawn the difference between bust, waist and hips, and you have to wonder ... did he really not understand the difference of these areas before?
It's ladies first for the challenge, and the beauties walk out to find tables set up as small launch pads. They will each build their own rocket, and the first to launch theirs past a certain height wins immunity for her team and also gets to choose a team to send to the elimination room at the end of the show.
As the challenge starts, Krystal notes she doesn't like her goggles as they're ugly and big. Still, she's very calm, takes her time and earns a big lead. Caitilin catches up to be neck and neck with her. Krystal's rocket goes off first, but doesn't go anywhere. Cailitin's rocket goes off next and reaches the desired clearance. She and Chuck win their third challenge in a row. Caitilin says she'll walk out of there feeling better than when she arrived. Just like last week, I'm not sure what the purpose of the show is, but it does seem to be doing wonders for the contestants' self esteem.
Bryan gathers the five geeks downstairs and tells them they will now go shopping and choose three outfits for their teammate – a swimsuit, evening wear and casual wear. It's time for them to show what they have learned about the ladies, as far as their personal style, favorite color, size, etc.
Walking into the swimsuit store, Shawn says he feels like it's a test in school and he's hoping to get a passing grade. Richard thinks of it as a road trip to Beverly Hills and shares that he has never bought clothes for a woman before.
Still wanting to pass, Shawn asks where the thongs are, prompting Richard to go off on a tangent about "butt floss." Chuck asks the sales clerk what her measurements are for a comparison and then asks her to rate the swimsuits on "hotness factor." Richard is into buying animal prints. That's right – animal print butt floss.
Moving onto the second store, the geeks still need to find a casual outfit and something for evening wear. Chuck knows he wants something in purplish-pink. Richard tells the clerk Mindi's body is like his but sticks out in different places. Ummm, I know you haven't been with a girl before, Richard, but there's a little more to it than that.
Back at the house, the guys compare notes with the gals on sizes. Chuck celebrates the fact that he guessed size six and that's what Caitilin wears. Richard asks Mindi if she wears a four and she says no. He asks if she wears a two, and she says no, she wears a zero. He asks what the heck a zero is, as that must mean you don't exist. Shawn probably isn't alone in his feelings when he relates that it was a very traumatizing experience.
A surveillance camera catches Chuck and Scarlet, who are not teammates, in a bed with Chuck giving her a back massage. She says later she was feeling tense, and remembering from last week's challenge that he gave the best back massages, asked him if he would oblige her. During this massage they realize they have things in common, such as they both know Spanish. Scarlet asks him if he's ever had a Latin girlfriend, and he replies no. He then tells her he's not good at expressing himself, but she is the most beautiful woman in the house. I think that's expressing yourself pretty well, Chuck.
The men have their challenge the next day and it's to be a fashion show with the ladies wearing the outfits the men picked out for them. Judging the show will be three noted fashion experts. Lauren loves what Bill has picked out and thinks he did an excellent job. Scarlet is just as excited over what Shaun picked out. Caitilin thinks the thong is going to be very small on her rear.
The women don the evening wear first and Mindi notices she and Lauren have identical dresses, but in different colors. She also notes Lauren's fits well, but her is a few sizes too big. Lauren thinks hers is a cute dress she would wear out. Scarlet knew she had to sell it to the judges that Shawn had done a good job picking out her clothes, but it wasn't a stretch as she felt great in them. Krystal felt like her dress fit like a garbage bag. Caitilin thinks her dress is too big and puffy. She says Richard has a high IQ, but his fashion IQ is a 3.
Lauren says her casual outfit fits perfectly. The brown corduroy pants Chuck has picked out for Caitilin are two sizes too big and about six inches too long. She feels like he was dressing his mom. That's not good, Chuck. Mindi's size four bikini doesn't fit her size zero butt ,and she says it's like she has poop in her pants. As Shawn watches Scarlet walk out in the bikini he picked out for her, he admits to a certain arousal effect. Krystal walks the catwalk in fear her boobs will fly out of her bikini.
As each geek stands beside his beauty, the judges tell them how they did with their fashion choices. They seem to gloss right over Bill and Lauren, but tell Richard he must be a Flinstones fan because of his love of animal prints. Brad is told his choices didn't fit Krystal well. Chuck is asked if he even liked Caitilin because of what he had her wearing. Shawn is told Scarlet had on great shoes, which is good, because I think the ladies picked those out themselves. They tell Scarlett she looked confident in what Shawn picked out for her and all three judges award them the winners of this challenge.
Since Chuck and Caitilin are safe from elimination as are Shawn and Scarlett, that means two of the remaining three couples will face off in the elimination round. Richard is once again sporting his literal brown nose and wears a hat that says, "Alliance anyone?" Chuck says of Richard that it's easier to be laughed at for being a buffoon than for being yourself. Ouch. Richard believes he is number one on Chuck's list for elimination. Mindi warns him not to try and piss people off before elimination. I think it's a little past that, Mindi.
Everyone is gathered as the elimination choices are announced. Caitilin says she and Chuck made their choice together, and it will be Richard and Mindi. Through tears she says they feel this house and game are life-changing experiences. They felt they were breaking through with Richard, but in the end, just couldn't get through. Shawn says he and Scarlet feel it's an opportunity to learn about themselves, and think Brad and Krystal don't need that opportunity as much as the others, so they will be the couple to face off against Richard and Mindi.
Krystal is very annoyed that she and Brad are going to the elimination room for the second week in a row. Mindi isn't as upset about going for the first time. She had promised Richard that she would teach him how to spoon some day, so she decides she needs to do that in case they get eliminated. Once he tries it, Richard shouts out, "Oh my God!" and calls the experience phenomenal. He thinks they should try to get eliminated more often.
In the elimination room it will be Mindi and Krystal up first, each answering three questions about astronomy. Mindi knows the earth makes one revolution around the sun in a year, but Krystal gets a lunar eclipse mixed up with a solar eclipse. Mindi knows the name of the famous comet is Hailey's. Krystal guesses correctly that the closest star to earth in the sun. Mindi answers correctly that space shuttles launch out of Florida, but Krystal guesses the wrong planet named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. She guesses Jupiter instead of Venus. At least she didn't say Uranus. Okay, I held back on the bad rocket science clichés, but I just had to do the bad Uranus joke.
With Mindi ahead of Krystal three to one, Brad and Richard come out to answer questions about fashion. Brad is asked to name the animals represented in the fashion labels Lacoste, le Tigre, and Ralph Lauren. He knows the last two are a tiger and horse, but doesn't know the first is an alligator. Richard guesses that the DK of DKNY stands for Devin Klein instead of Donna Karan. If Brad gets the next one wrong, he and Krystal will be leaving. He is asked what upscale department store shares a name with a popular kids' character. He doesn't even have a guess, and as Bryan tells him the answer is Barney's, he also tells him he and Krystal are eliminated.
Saying goodbye to Krystal, Richard kisses her full on the lips and notes it's the first time he has ever kissed any woman on the lips. Wow. He needs this show. Krystal notes later she has to give him a pat on the back for having the courage to do that and is happy for him.
