Lack of sleep will make a person do what they normally wouldn't do under regular circumstances. Lets face it, he was out there for over 13 hours. He probably didn't sleep all that well the night before because he was worried about if he would make it back into the house. So he was most likely tired to begin with...
then you add the fact that he didn't really hit Jennifer/April hard when he was in... yes he got rid of Eric, but that just helps Jennifers/April because they weren't put up. He had made the plan to evict James so that doesn't hurt Jennifer in any way either. He probably figured that he might be safe because she gave her word to him that she would keep him safe, and that since he didn't directly gun for her or her partner he would be safe.
