DEANNA’S DREAM DEFERRED
When voting began last night, early returns indicated the bottom three included
Ty,
Deanna and
Jordis. Though the numbers fluctuated throughout the voting period, only one of those singers is safe tonight: Jordis.
Marty, Ty and Deanna are the three who end up in the spotlight, and though INXS loves her voice, Deanna just isn’t right for them, and she is eliminated.
SUZIE’S THE NEW SENSATION
When host
Brooke Burke asks who thinks they deserve the opportunity to sing the encore,
Suzie, Ty, Deanna and
J.D. raise their hands. Ty feels his performance felt like a show, and not just someone singing in a competition. Deanna believes an original song should be showcased, and adds, “I’m really proud of the song I wrote with Ty.” That piques Brooke's curiosity as to why
Mig didn’t raise his hand. While he’s also proud of his original song “Do or Die,” Mig feels “[he] could’ve done it better…there were performances last night which are much more deserving of the encore.” Dave notes that the person the band selected has always set the bar high vocally and last night, she went “above and beyond anything we’ve seen [her] do before.” Suzie is stunned to hear her name announced, and the crowd goes crazy. After she gains her composure, she rocks the house once more.
MARTY’S METHOD OF MADNESS
Before the performances begin, the focus shifts to the rockers' earlier reactions to last night's show. Although Deanna killed on her original song, ”My Truth,” she's unable to enjoy the moment because of the band’s critique that she stayed in her safety zone. “How comfortable is it to sing power rock?” Mig agrees it’s hard. Frustrated, she adds, “I’m just singing the way I sing…I don’t know what to do anymore.” J.D. puts in his two cents: “Just be yourself.” Deanna’s retorts, “I am being myself, but everybody here’s being themselves and nobody else is getting called [on] that.” In confessional, Deanna says that although INXS likes her voice, if she can’t give them what they need, maybe she’s not right for them.
On the other hand, Marty doesn’t let their previous critiques get to him--he ignores them altogether. “They’re asking me to tone it down, I’m going to turn it up.” In confessional, he clarifies that it wasn’t a diss, but a method to his madness. He notes that popular groups today like System of a Down thrive on an intense, angst-vocal style, and “I’m trying to bring that to INXS .”
Jordis, of course, is devastated about how she sang: “It sucks to have a bad performance.” She’s prepared to be in the bottom three, but it would be her first time performing an INXS song, and she’s fearful that INXS may determine she’s not right for them after all. While Suzie admits she’s happy with her performance, she still believes she might end up in the bottom three.
THE BULL SESSION
Brooke asks Marty about his reverse rocker psychology. He candidly states that he’d done what they’d requested about performing ballads, but his fear is that he may lose himself. His goal is to meet them halfway. “Let’s take what you have, let’s take what I have, and let’s make the future out of that.” Dave agrees.
Tim then reveals the band’s own reverse rocker psychology. He discloses they thought Marty gave one of the best performances last night, but their critique of him was a test to see how he’d react--and he did fine. He adds, “Meet us halfway, you’ll go a long way.”
When Brooke asks Deanna about her frustration, she reveals that she's left her comfort zone; it's not easy to quickly write a song, rehearse and arrange it with a band, let alone perform in front of millions. She adds, “I’m a power singer…I can’t ultimately change who the core of me is as a singer.” Dave supports both Deanna's and Marty's statements. He reiterates that only one will win the spot, so it’s important to stay true to who they are. Translation: stay true to the career you want to have when you leave.
Kirk gives Deanna some love, saying, “You are absolutely fantastic at what you do… [But] we have to push you in all sorts of different directions to see where your boundaries are [musically].”
Brooke asks the resident go-getter, J.D., what he thinks it’ll take to be the lead singer of INXS. He latches onto Marty’s “meeting halfway” position, and adds that some are more suited than others. Speaking of being suited, Dave acknowledges that J.D. might be controversial on the show, but his voice is well-suited for INXS. J.D. returns the love by stating that the INXS back catalogue is the main reason he’s a singer-songwriter today.
THE BOTTOM THREE DOUBLES TO SIX
Before announcing the bottom three, Brooke asks Suzie about the possibility of being up for elimination again. Suzie says she’s ready, and to show how much, she pulls out a hat that has “Queen of the Bottom 3” printed on it. Dave even says if she’s in the bottom three tonight, he’ll wear the hat for the rest of the season.
Brooke then questions Jordis about taking a big risk with “Dream On.” Jordis confesses she didn’t know how big a risk it was until rehearsal, but she also feels if she saw someone doing the song, she’d want them to go for the high note. She confidently states, “I’d do it again until I got it right.” Brooke asks if she thinks she’s in the bottom three, and Jordis responds, “I’d be upset if I wasn’t. Everybody else killed--I deserve to be in the bottom three.” Dave and Jon agree that she just had an off night, but Jon loves her voice, and if he gets to hear her sing INXS this way, he’s not complaining.
When Brooke announces Deanna, Ty and Jordis were last night's bottom three, the audience voices their displeasure. However, Brooke states that J.D., Marty and Mig ended up in the bottom three at some point during the voting as well. Despite the bad news for those six rockers, the crowd goes crazy as they realize that Suzie is the only one who's safe. She’s in shock again, and she's feeling really good. Dave is elated he won’t have to wear the hat.
FROM THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM
Of the six possible rockers to be called, Brooke announces Ty first. As he takes the stage, Dave is totally traumatized: “This is a state of emergency…I totally don’t understand.” Kirk agrees, but tells Ty he’s doing “What You Need.” Ty takes on the challenge, adding his own touch to the song. After his performance, Kirk asks him how he feels about performing INXS songs. Ty loves it, but he's frustrated that the world doesn’t seem to think he’s meant to be there. Taking a slight jab at J.D., he quips, “I know I’m supposed to be here, so I don’t need to talk about it a lot.”
With five left, the next name Brooke calls is Deanna. She’s very disappointed, but Dave gives her props. “That whole comfort zone thing…Forget it about, just do your thing. You’re awesome.” Andrew seconds, “When you sing the sun comes out.” He asks her to sing “Elegantly Wasted”-- a song that allows her to work her power vocals. She gives her all, and afterwards, Andrew asks how she feels about doing INXS songs. She responds that she loves to rock and to dance, and their music allows her to do both.
Of the four remaining rockers, J.D., Mig, and surprisingly, Jordis are revealed to be safe. At Marty's inclusion in the bottom three, Jordis looks upset, but Dave is furious. “This is a crime…I don’t know what to say.” He drops his mic to the floor in disgust. Jon notes that Marty’s first time up for elimination is a big change, so the song “Don’t Change” fits him. Marty proceeds to rock out on the song, and gives it the updated alt-rock vibe he spoke earlier of wanting to bring to INXS. The audience loves it, and so does INXS. Jon asks Marty how he feels about singing INXS, and he replies, "Powerful." He adds that he learned INXS songs to learn how to write songs.
DEANNA’S OMEN COMES TRUE…
After deliberation, Tim states that it’s getting harder because now they’re at the stage where all the remaining rockers are great. He continues that it’s not so bad to be in the bottom three anymore "because we get to hear you sing our music." Tim announces Marty is safe, leaving Ty and Deanna. The tears start to flow for Deanna, and Ty tries to comfort her. But Tim makes her prediction come true, and says that she’s not right for the band. Ty hugs her before joining the other rockers. Dave says, “I think you’re going to be amazing…I would play with you any day of the week.” Deanna smiles through her tears. She mentions how on reality shows she watched as a viewer people get booted off, and now it’s her reality. She doesn’t want to go home-- “I wanted to lead your band.” She tells her housemates how much loves them, and wishes them luck. Andrew thanks Deanna for her heartfelt energy and passion she brought to the show.
With only six performers left, will the environment become more competitive? And how will everyone react to Deanna's dismissal? Tune in this Sunday to VH1 at 8 pm to find out.
